i was a gnome warrior too! dont worry, at 70 you can strike fear into the hearts of even the biggest cow-guys.
anyway, you can get pets even if your a class that doesnt use them. for example, there is a farm in the area of west fall, you do the right combonation of things ( the stuff you gotta do its all over the internet, youll know it when you see it) and then youll get an egg that you click on and a chicken follows you around. there are cats, dogs, and all sorts of creatures that are avaliable to everyone–only thing is they dont do anything for you in combat, they are just fun to have!

You have to be a Hunter in order to have a pet or a Warlock in order to have a demon.
You can be a Dwarf Hunter if you like the location or Night Elf and I think Human. Draenei might have it too but that needs a BC expansion. Those are only the alliance ones by the way. The Horde have just as many or there about.

Umm.. Why would you have to be a human? If you want to have a pet that will fight with you, yes you need to be a hunter.. but no you don’t have to be human……. but if you just want a companion– which is a little animal or whatever that follows you around but doesn’t fight, you can buy them from the auction house or somewhere like that. Hope this helps.

you can get a pet at AH but it wont fight for you, you have to be a hunter to get one to fight for you.
