Are you going to breed your dog?

Filed in Category WoW Pets

<--- See him? For those who don't know, he is my Coby, my maltese/poodle MUTT. I got him from a rescue a few weeks ago.

Anyway, I was with him in PetSmart when a lady asked, "What kind of dog is he?"

I answered, "He's a maltese/poodle mix." The lady got a delighted look on her face.

"Oh, a maltipoo? I love those dogs."

"Something like that," I agreed through my teeth, wishing I could chew her out.

"My Bella looks just like him. Maltipoos are great." The lady smiled and reached down to pet him. (Coby, bless him, slunk away from her hand and let out a low growl.)

"Especially when you count all the genetic health problems," I added under my breath. She didn't hear me though.

"He has a great temperment," she told me as Coby tried to hide from her. "Are you going to breed him?"

I had a water bottle in my hand and I dropped it. My mouth fell open. Coby looked at me like I was crazy.

"What?" I asked the woman, my eyes locking onto hers. She started to get uncomfortable.

"He looks like a great breeding specimen. There aren't enough maltipoos nowadays. The pet store by me hasn't had any in stock since April." I was still frozen.

A smile danced across my face, and an evil glint appeared in my eye. "Why yes," I agreed, "there *aren't* enough maltipoos nowadays." The lady looked relieved.

"You know," she started, "I'm looking for a stud for my Bella. Would you be interested?"

I didn't mention that Coby was neutered.

"Maybe," I answered. "Is she a good specimen?"

"Oh yes!" The lady began to tell me all about her Bella. "She's small-- about 6 pounds. She's pure white with brown eyes. She's very clean. I think she'd make a great mom."

"She sure sounds like it," I agreed, my smile getting bigger. "What else?"

She thought for a moment. "She gets compliments all the time. She's very cute."

"She sure sounds like it," I agreed. "I just have a few more questions."

"Sure," the lady said.

"Has she been tested for vWB? How was her OFA score? Her CERF? Narcolepsy? Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency? Dyslapsia? Hypothyroidism? Progressive Retinal Atrophy?"

The lady's eyes got bigger and bigger as I listed off some more (luckily I had just read an article about it. Funny how things work, huh?) Finally, when I was finished, she answered.

"Her vet said she was really healthy."

I smiled. "Of course. Is she registered?"

"Yes!" the lady said proudly. "The Continental Kennel Club."

"Oh wow. That's wonderful." I paused, composing myself. "Has she won any titles?" The lady looked at me blankly. "In dog shows?" I added.

A pause. "I wasn't aware the CKC held dog shows."

I shrugged. "Ah, well. It doesn't matter. Your Bella seems like a wonderful dog."

"Oh, she is," the lady assured me.

"Maybe I will stud out my Coby."

The lady's face lit up. "That's wonderful! Bella will go into her first heat any day now, so I'll email you. Sound like a plan?"

My smile got ten times wider. "Oh yes, it sure does. Only, I forgot to mention one thing."

"Yeah?"

"I only let Coby mate with b*tches that are spayed."

The lady's face took on a look of confusion. "But... that means a dog can't have puppies."

"Exactly."

Angry, the lady stalked off, and I hurried to the car before I broke down into a fit of laughter that lasted a good ten minutes. Coby just looked at me the whole time.

I was wondering... has anyone ever come up to you and asked about breeding your dog? What'd you do?

I usually give them a plain and very cold no and explain why. I go on forever about puppy mills and what AKC and reputable breeding is all about and how you can’t tell what a great dog is by looking at it. My most famous line is “you can’t tell when a person has HIV nor can you tell when a dog is carrying a bad gene”

My chiweenie is very cute yes…but not for breeding…nor will any of my mutts be for breeding.

Education is the only solution… I’ve never been asked this specific question, thank god.

I think every person looking to breed should have to do 150 hours of service at an animal shelter, specifically a shelter that euthanizes pets, before breeding.

Also a license to be able to breed would be a great thing… unfortunately totally unenforceable.

Great story – and Yes I have … 2 Retired Racing Greyhounds — I politely say Sorry – he is retired from the field and walk on.

I simply say “he’s neutered, and she’s spayed”.

I really don’t know….I’m pretty sure I’d do the same as you, but I wouldn’t be as nice, of course! I would use much more ‘colorful’ language!

So funny- Thanks for posting this.

I have beagle/Italian greyhound that I rescue a few months ago. She is adorable with a great personality. We haven’t taken her out much yet, because it is beyond hot her in Texas. However, if anyone ever asks me to breed her I will have to remember your conversation.

Hahahaha! What I would have GIVEN to be there!!

Nope, that has never happened to me. However, my friend wants to breed her Husky–and me and my other friend are extremely against it. I’ll have to ask her some of those questions when the time comes!!

And my parents *wanted* to breed our Aussie/Catahoula mix to our Sheltie (NOT a good idea) but I finally convinced them to get her spayed this winter! It’s a HUGE feat for me–YAY!

    Haha that’s hilarious.

No, thank god they haven’t. I don’t think they would believe a 13 year old girl would be smart enough to figure out how to breed my beagle to their poodledoodle.

LMAO!!!! I needed that laugh today, thank you!!

I think that’s the first word out of anyone’s mouth these days when they see a dog. I’ve only ever asked that question of show dogs I meet. As soon as my clients hit about 5 months old, I start suggesting it’s time to spay/neuter every time they come in for grooming. I’ve been asked about my dogs, one of which is neutered, the other of which was previously a show prospect (so my answer was “We’ll see how he does at the shows”) but after his 1st birthday I determined he’s just not quite good enough for show, so he’s scheduled for a neutering in the near future.

Someone asked my boyfriend about using his (neutered) Boston Terrier for a stud. He’s not an *awful* looking BT, but he’s a little on the large side (24-28lbs), he has bad markings, crooked teeth, a pretty bad luxating patella, and a very square head/mouth. So while he’s not as bad as some dogs you see, he’d never win a show and should not be bred.

    Silly, silly people.

    Lmfao.

I’ve had people ask me to mate their dog with Roxy and Max before.

One woman asked me if I would mate Max with her Bordedoodle and I looked at Max, picked up his tail and went “if you can find them be my guest!”

If it’s the ones I intended to breed but decided not to, I tell them why.
In the case of one dog, it is because she is epileptic, and in the case of another, it is because she is too high drive for this area, and I don’t really want to ship puppies. She’s a fabulous girl, and deserves to have puppies – but I don’t need half a dozen more, and I’ll have any of them back, for life.

Since I have well bred dogs of a breed, it isn’t an issue of having mutts or designermutts – it is that we make consious decisions for specific reasons.

If I am approached by someone who wants to breed their dog to mine, they go home hating me for picking apart their dog.

Anyone who would automatically make the assumption I would breed my bltch to it isn’t asking any hard questions like whether or not my bltch is even worthy of breeding- and therefore, they always have some awful thing with trailer trash for a pedigree.

I make no excuses, and if they are trolling around wanting to make some money, they are in for a surprise. They aren’t going to have kids with my daughter, either.

haha nice one,,,would have loved to have seen her face,,,,
to answer your question,,,i got asked an even more RIDICOLOUS question, and also in a pet shop, mmmm ,
well while in pet shop looking around, with our two dogs,
member of staff came up to admire them,,,
ASKING WHAT S”X THEY WERE I REPLIED,,ONE OF EACH,,
OH ARE YOU GONNA BREED THEM WITH EACH OTHER THEN,,,
SHOCKED I SAID WHAT !!! OF COURSE NOT ,,THAT WOULD BE RIDICULOUS,AND WALKED OFF,,STUNNED,,!!!

    REASON I WAS STUNNED,,,
    I HAVE A MALE DOBERMANN—
AND FEMALE TIBETAN SPANIAL-little smaller than a pom,,
I MEAN, WHO IN THEIR WILDEST IMAGINATION WOULD EVEN TRY TO MATE
A– A LARGE BREED WITH A SMALL BREED DELIBERATLY
B–LET THE SMALL BREED BE THE FEMALE,,,
    i mean seriously wtf

  16. Berner Lover on November 15, 2011 3:31 am

Great answer.. Would loved to of been there to see her face.

I’m not sure at this moment in time i would want a stud dog, you also have responsibilities as well as the breeder..
Also my breeder would have to agree to it and lift the restrictions on his pedigree if i were to go down that route.

  17. boycottpetland08 on November 15, 2011 4:24 am

LMAO!!!! This was the highlight of my day!!!

  18. (lkb) *Pilot* on November 15, 2011 4:49 am

OH MY STARS……Shannon!! You did well!! :o D

Ohhhhhh yes!! Pilot is quite handsome (and is neutered). I’ve had about 4 people ask me if I’d be interested in breeding him with their females. I tell them that he has his favorite “fluffy” pillow upstairs in our room that he is devoted to and there is no more room in his live for another female! LOL!!! One lady laughed “hysterically”, and one other younger gal (in late 20’s to early 30’s) said…………”Ewe”!!!

Didn’t matter to me what they thought. I got the last laugh and it was more than satisfying!

  19. alias boxer on November 15, 2011 5:48 am

LMAO That is AWESOME. Best answer ever!!!

Maybe I should try that next time!! People have asked me before if my dog will be having puppies (she’s a white boxer), and I usually just laugh… but your answer deserves an award, really!

  20. Lacie ?my heart? on November 15, 2011 5:59 am

People ask us all the time if Lacie will be “having babies”. I always just give the standard…no she’s spayed. Now that we have Loki…people on occasion have asked us if we are breeding them “soon”. Then I tend to get into detail about how Loki is a mutt and Lacie is spayed…bla bla bla. Most people that see us walking down the street think that both of my dogs are purbred APBT’s. So ignorant :)

alias boxer is right…you deserve an Emmy for that one :)

  21. Stacey Z on November 15, 2011 6:11 am

good for you people like that make me sick

  22. marjoriemalsbury on November 15, 2011 6:44 am

<<<<<<<<~ JJ has an exceptionally placid and sunny character, still has the puppy enthusiasm for life and gallops around with glee when he's out. Quite a few people have commented on his happy nature, glossy thick coat ect and asked if I will use him as a stud or have him neutered.

JJ has no KC papers, so there's no question of him being used as a stud dog.

If someone I didn't know asked if my b*tch Tori was spayed/would I have a litter, I always replied yes she was spayed, just in case the person was thinking of stealing her. I used to show Tori, now spayed for medical reasons.

(Tori has spayed on her ID disc now)
